Principals’ Leadership Academy
Summer 2008, one-day workshop (date TBA) followed by on-site mentoring once a month, September 2008-May 2009
Principals Leadership Academy begins
its second year in Houston. In partnership with the Houston Montessori Center, Dr.
Bill Sommers will meet with principals and future principals for a one-day workshop. From this group, three principals will be awarded a one-year grant that provides monthly on-site assistance and individual executive coaching sessions via telephone.
In awarding grants, preference will be given to principals of large high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools that serve a high percentage of students on free or reduced lunch.
Focus of this program is on use
of best business practices in running a school.
Learning Environments Program of Classroom Management
(ENVoY)

In partnership with St. Landry Parish
School board, Knowledge Arts has engaged Adrian Bunn Walker (Master Trainer of ENVoY Program of Classroom Management) to present a workshop for
teachers and administrators in Eunice, Louisiana. Teacher leaders
and principals from other school systems are warmly invited to
attend both days of training at Highland Elementary School in Eunice. Thanks to generous sponsors,

Best Classroom Strategies for Students from the Culture of Poverty

In partnership with school districts in Houston and Louisiana,
is bringing strategies for reaching children from the culture of
poverty along with on-site coaching to winners of KAF Grants. To request a grant application, send contact information to Roxana@knowledgearts.net.

Implementation support begins.
Coaching and on-site technical assistance for teachers and
administrators in Houston and Opelousas (Louisiana). Job-embedded coaching in new schools, and continuation of coaching in schools entering second and third years of ENVoY program.

Fundamentals of Understanding Poverty
August 16, 2007
In partnership with HISD's South
Region, Knowledge Arts is bringing Dr. Rita Pierson back to present
Fundamentals of Understanding Poverty. Last August, Rita captivated
the 450 middle school teachers in the South Region with her powerful
stories and strategies for reaching children from the culture of
poverty. This year she will present to 400+ elementary school
teachers and school leaders.

Fundamentals of Understanding Poverty
August 7, 2006
Knowledge Arts collaborated with the
schools to introduce Ruby’s Payne’s work to every Middle School
teacher in the South Region of HISD. Rita Pierson captivated the
audience of 450 teachers with powerful stories and strategies for
reaching children from the culture of poverty. Such a unified
presentation is seldom available due to individual campus
schedules.
The principals of all five middle schools in the South Region
came together to make this happen.

Knowledge
Arts and HISD's South Region collaborated to bring Rita Pierson back
for a presentation to the principals and instructional leaders in
all forty schools of the South Region.
Learning Environments Program of Classroom Management
(ENVoY)
Faculty members from six schools in the South Region were trained
in The Seven Gems of Classroom Management during August, with follow
up individual coaching made available to the teachers on a voluntary
basis. In late April, KAF will offer a week-long Coaches Lab to
train in-house coaches at each of the schools—thus insuring
sustainability of the program. Dowling Middle School was unable to
schedule the training in classroom management prior to the start of
school, but could begin at a future date.

Principals’ Leadership Academy
Individual coaching for several school administrators and future
administrators began in September 2006. The Leadership Academy will
host its first group sessions in Houston, June 15-16, 2007. A few

Five-day Coaching Lab for 12 teachers from HISD's
South Region. Four demonstration schools will host the lab and
receive extra coaching: Gregg Elementary School, Rhoads Elementary
School, Thomas Middle School, and Hartman Middle School.
2005-06 School Year
August 2005
Began Math Program at both Hartman Middle
School (1600 + students) and Thomas Middle School (about 800
students). Presented Ruby Payne's background on the Fundamentals of
Understanding Poverty and Learning Structures for Math to
approximately 30 teachers and content specialists from the South
Region. Throughout the year, Technical Assistance was provided to
both schools' Math Departments resulting in increased TAKS scores at
both schools.
May 2006
Knowledge Arts began the ENVoY Program of
Classroom Management at Hartman Middle School.
